Two-Hander

Breakdown of Characters

All roles could theoretically be played by two performers plus a multi-talented stage manager, with a few extra technical events accomplished with the aid of a stagehand.  A more sane approach, however, might be to hire a third performer known as the “Stage Manager.” The few extra technical needs for a fourth body can then be handled either by the actual stage manager or a stagehand.

Two performers play all the “human” roles, with the exception of walk-ons in Act One Scene 5 and Act Two Scene Four by the Stage Manager. The roles break down as follows:

Performer 1 (male):
Phone Installer (PI), Sardonic Producer (SP), Auditioners 1, 3 and 5 (A1, A3, A5), Skeptic puppet (voice), Lighting Designer, Director puppet (only at the beginning of Scene 5) [Note: as close an imitation of Stage Manager’s “voice” of Director should be attempted], George, Jed, Jellyfish puppet, Porcupine Actor, Nobel Prize Announcer (v.o.)

Performer 2 (female or male):
Naïve Producer (NP), Auditioners 2 and 4 (A2, A4), Set Designer, Honey, Elly-May, Ex-Wife Porcupine puppet, Jellyfish Actor

"Stage Manager" (male):
Casting Director puppets (CD1, CD2), Syd McKee puppet (SMP), Loan Officer puppet, Uncle puppet, Director puppet (except at beginning of Scene 5), Choreographer puppet, Stage Manager, Voice (singing), Martha/Granny puppet (two voices), Nick/Jethro puppet (two voices), Cop, Soothing Voice, Porcupine puppet, Dolphin puppet (DP), Monkfish puppet, Angelfish puppet, Newsboy puppet, Pat Launer puppet, Presenter V.O.’s (at all awards shows), Swedish Announcer, Translator puppet, Changeling puppet [Note: this puppet has three voices; as close an imitation of Performer 1’s “voice” of SP, and both of Performer 2’s NP “voices”—the “naïve” and the “cynical”—should be attempted], Changeling’s Butt, Buffalo puppet, Felt Puppet
